Vegetarian Haggis

The highly versatile vegetarian haggis is a much loved and award winning addition to our range.

It was first produced in 1984 when we were invited to supply Macsween's haggis for a party to mark the opening of the Scottish Poetry Library. The library’s Director, Tessa Ransford challenged John Macsween to make a meat free version and the experimentation began. This was seen as a controversial departure but the ‘veggie haggis’ has remained popular ever since and now accounts for a quarter of all Macsween’s haggis sales.

Macsween’s vegetarian haggis is a delicious, vegan friendly blend of kidney beans, lentils, nuts and locally sourced fresh vegetables. These ingredients are combined with oatmeal, onions, seasonings similar to the traditional haggis and is served in a man made casing. The result is a more subtle and nutty textured dish which vegetarians love and meat eaters are increasingly enjoying too.

We think the Macsween vegetarian haggis is particularly delicious served with roast meat or along with roasted vegetables and haloumni cheese. Our vegetarian haggis has won numerous awards, including a Gold Medal at The Great Taste Awards in 2005 and Category Winner of the Food from Scotland Grocery Awards.
